5 Colour Child Evangelism

Unsaved children have a serious problem. They are also going to die because of their sins. They have the right to hear the gospel! It's a case of life and death! Between 4 and 14 years old 85% of children accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour.

Remember to use a version of the Bible that is the same as the one the child has (so that they can see that their Bible says what you are talking about).

Ensure that the atmosphere is right, quiet, serious. Ask a few questions to make them feel comfortable. You can also try and assess whether or not they are saved by asking: What did Jesus do for you?

You must never assume a child is saved!

Mar 10:13-14  And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them.  (14)  But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God."

NB! Use visual aids while going through these 5 steps.

You can make a book where each page is a color, it's called 'The Wordless Book'. You can make a big one if you have a class of kids or a small one to keep in your Bible for one to one evangelism. You don't have to use the Wordless book but can print and cut out the shapes as well, you can also then give each child their own set and have them organize them in order and explain it back to you.  Use your imagination, make it interesting and interactive.

See the great visual aids available in our shop.

1. Gold – God and heaven

  • God made everything (eg. Animals, plants, etc.).
  • God made you too.
  • God loves you very much.
Joh 3:16  For God so loved the world...
  • He has made a perfect place for you in heaven. Joh 14:2-3  In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? (3)  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
  • God is calling you to Him. Mat 11:28  Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

But: There is something that can never be in heaven, and that is sin!

  2. Dark heart

NB!  Explain that it's not a black heart, but that it's a dark heart like the night. Sin is anything that makes God unhappy. Sin can be anything that is wrong, which you:
do, or say, or think, or things you don't do that you should have done.

  • Eg. not putting your toys away, but throwing them under the bed. Col 3:20  Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
  • Eg. swearing or telling lies or gossiping. Col 3:8  But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
  • Eg. think of stealing money from your mom's purse.
  • Eg. not helping someone who has been hurt, but just walking away. Jas 4:17  So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Each one of us (me, and you too) are born with a will to want to do what is wrong (to do your own will).
Rom 3:23  for all have sinned...Sin separates you from God.

Sin prevents you from entering heaven (to God's perfect place for you).

You cannot save yourself – you can never be perfect enough for God.
Eph 2:8-9  For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,  (9)  not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Explain Grace = God's mercy, love, kindness, not anything we deserve; gift = something you have not worked for or earned.

But God made a wonderful plan so that our sins can be forgiven and so that we can be with Him in heaven one day.

3. Red - The cross

  • Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Act 9:20  And immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues,
saying, "He is the Son of God."
  • Jesus gave His blood so that your sins can be forgiven.
Heb 9:22b  …. and without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins.
  • He willingly carried the punishment that was meant for you
  • He could die on the cross in your place because He is perfect / without sin.
2Cor 5:21  For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
  • He died, but He rose again.
1Cor 15:3b-4  …. that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,  (4)  that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
  • He is now in heaven with His Father.

Because Jesus did this for you, your sins can be forgiven and you can be ready for heaven.

4. Clean heart

NB!  Explain that it's not a white heart, but a clean heart.

  • God is calling you to come to Him.
Rev 3:20  Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and eat with him, and he with me.
  • Admit to God that you are a sinner and that you want to repent (turn away) from your sins.
  • Believe that Jesus died for your sins and that He is the only One who can take your sins away.
Act 16:30-31  Then he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"  (31)  And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household."
  • Choose the Lord Jesus Christ, accept Him as your Saviour, and know that He then gives you the right to be called a child of God.
Joh 1:12  But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

Accepting Christ

NEVER force a child to make a decision! Also never try to convince the child – that is the Holy Spirit's work.

If the child does want to accept Jesus as his Saviour, revise everything that you have taught him about each colour, and ask questions to make sure he understands, eg.:

  • What is sin?
  • Do you have sin in your life?
  • What does God see when He looks into your heart? Give examples.
  • What is the problem with sin?
  • How does God punish sin?
  • Can you do anything to make your sin go away?
  • Who is Jesus Christ?
  • Why did God send His Son into the world?
  • For whom did Jesus die on the cross?
  • What did Jesus do for you on the cross?
  • What happened to Jesus after He was crucified and where is He now?

The child must understand that he has a problem, he must understand that his problem is his sin, and he must understand that only Jesus can help him.

You can ask the child again: “Do you want to tell God that you believe that Jesus died for your sins?”

If the child says “Yes”, let the child pray and tell God (basic steps: admit, believe, choose):

  • Admit that he is a sinner. Confess all the sins he can think of that he ever did in his life.
  • He believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died for his sins, that He can cleanse him from his sins, and that He rose from the dead and is now in heaven.
  • Choose Jesus Christ as King of your life.

After the child has prayed, assure him that he is now a child of God:

  • Jn 1:12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
  • Ask the child if he is certain that this has happened. If he is not sure, go through everything with him again.
  • When he comes to the point where he is certain, put the child's name in the verse (Joh 1:12) and read it again.
  • Ask: “What does the Bible say God has done for you now?” (He has forgiven my sins and made me His child).
  • How do you know? (The Bible says so)
  • Where is Jesus now? (In my heart)
  • Let the child say a thank you prayer.
  • Teach the child about confessing his sins: Confess immediately whenever you have sinned and ask God's forgiveness.
1Jn 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

5. Green - Spiritual growth

After we become God's children we need to grow just like the plants grow outside in the sunlight. The ways to grow spiritually can be remembered with the 5 fingers on your hand.
You must “high-5” Jesus every day:

  • Thumb (you can't pick your Bible up without your thumb): Read your Bible.
2Ti 3:15-16  and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.  (16)  All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
  • Forefinger (you stick up your finger if you want to speak): Pray (speak to Jesus).
    1Thes 5:17  pray without ceasing,
  • Middle finger (longest – stand out for Jesus): Testify (tell others about Jesus), stand out for Jesus.
  • Ring finger (wedding finger – remain loyal to Jesus): Confess your sins.
1Jn 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
  • Pinky: Go to Sunday school and church, spend time with other children of God.
  • If you have 1 finger less, you can't hold onto Jesus as tightly. All 5 fingers are very important.

Follow up

Give the child a tract, bookmark, Bible, etc.

Get the child's contact details, and follow up regularly. Do it with a senior person in your group – don't message or see the child on your own (because it could create problems).

Encourage the child to tell everyone what happened to him (his parents, his brothers and sisters, his friends, teachers, etc.) and that he is now a child of God.

Personal Work

Personal Work is reaching out to people one on one in stead of groups, building a relationship and over time leading them to salvation in Christ Jesus. But it does not end there, this newly saved person now needs to be guided and taught and that is where Discipleship comes in.

The Importance of Personal Soul Winning

by Dr. R. A. Torrey

"He first findeth his own brother Simon…. And he brought him to Jesus."–John 1:41,42. The one who brought his brother to Jesus was Andrew. We are not told that Andrew ever preached a sermon. If he did, the Holy Spirit did not think it worth putting on record. But this brother whom he brought to Jesus preached a sermon that led three thousand people to Jesus in one day.

Helps for new believers

Preparing Your Testimony

How To Give Your Testimony

Next to the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit, your personal testimony is probably one of the most powerful ways to witness to someone. Yet many Christians do not know how to go about giving one. They know they are saved, but perhaps do not know how to tell someone else about how becoming a Christian has changed their life.

I want to testify

I am a new Christian

What do I do now?

Eternal life is a gift received from God by faith. You cannot buy it, you cannot earn it, neither can you work to keep it. It is all by grace. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9. However, there are certain things God expects from you now.

What must I do?

Here are some questions to ask yourself when you need to make decisions about difficult issues. This is very useful for youth groups and guiding others.

The Most Important Question

Let us look at some of the things that we will get if we do the right thing with Jesus Christ.

Faith and Repentance

by Prof. Johan Malan

In the New Testament doctrine on salvation there is a mutual relationship between the concepts of “faith in Christ” and “repentance”. If we truly believe in Christ, repenting from our evil and selfish ways is inevitable. Faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior can only be expressed by turning away from the spiritual darkness of sin and taking refuge in Him who alone is able to forgive our sins and save our souls.

Hoe sien God ons?

Deur Ds. N A J van Rensburg
